Michael Mattern, Sebastian Bast ORCID Icon, Kai Scherer ORCID Icon, Klaus-Uwe Gollmer ORCID Icon, Michael Wahl
Makerspaces foster creativity, collaborative work and craftsmanship. Anyone interested can use tools, machines and technologies to realize their own projects and develop their technical skills in the process. They also provide an inspiring environment where people with different backgrounds and expertise come together to learn, experiment and support each other. The following article discusses the importance, features and equipment of makerspaces, in particular the Innovation Laboratory Digitalization, which promotes interdisciplinary work at the Trier University of Applied Sciences and serves as an interface to the specialized labs. In addition, the process of prototyping is described using several application examples.

Makigami in the Product Development Process

Makigami in the Product Development Process

Using a lean methodology to integrate sustainable and circular product design
Annika Pruhs ORCID Icon, Anina Kusch ORCID Icon, Frank Bertagnolli ORCID Icon, Tobias Viere, Jörg Woidasky ORCID Icon
In order to realize future improvements in circular product properties such as lifespan extension, continued use or high-quality recycling, industrial product development and design processes must take the entire ecological and economic life cycle of products into account. This article uses a company example to explain how such processes can be captured and analyzed using the Makigami method to support a comprehensive “Design for Circularity” concept. The chosen approach facilitates the identification of the application points of circular design decisions and the implementation of validated circular economy principles.

Open Innovation

Open Innovation

Strengthening Innovation in SMEs
Annette Henn ORCID Icon, Dirk Sackmann
Despite the fact that SME innovation is critical to a country’s economic success, SMEs spend less than 50 % of their budget on R&D when compared to large companies. “Open innovation”is seen as helping SMEs to improve their competitive position. For regions dominated by SMEs it is important to develop an ecosystem that supports open innovation processes. Universities can be key enablers within these ecosystems. They support SMEs with their expertise in science and engineering as well as in innovation and project management. In this article we present a case study to demonstrate the role of a university of applied sciences in an open innovation ecosystem.

Optimizing Production Processes with AI-based Knowledge Transfer

Optimizing Production Processes with AI-based Knowledge Transfer

How AI can secure human-oriented, experiential knowledge in the KI-eeper project
Nicole Ottersböck, Holger Dander ORCID Icon, Christian Prange ORCID Icon
Implicit experiential knowledge will be lost through the retirement of the babyboomer generation. This know-how is difficult to capture and transfer. The KI_eeper project aims to develop an efficient AI-based system that automatically identifies and stores knowledge in the work process. The resulting knowledge base will provide assistance to all employees. The system will be designed in cooperation with employees according to their needs to gain high user acceptance.

Understanding Openness and Its Implications for Sustainable Transformation
Nils Weiher ORCID Icon, Theresa Riedelsheimer ORCID Icon, Kai Lindow ORCID Icon
The topic of Openness is of growing importance for industry, especially in Europe. However, the term Openness is used very differently. Openness includes several concepts, including Open Source Hardware, Open Source Software, Open Data, Open Standards, Open Innovation, Open Science and Open Education. The concepts address different dimensions of Openness, all based on some kind of participation and with the goal to create more transparency and accessibility. This article defines the concepts and provides a basic understanding of their importance for industry and for greater sustainability.

Waste Heat Utilization through Thermal Cross-linking

Waste Heat Utilization through Thermal Cross-linking

A software solution for the development of optimized industrial energy concepts
Lukas Theisinger, Fabian Borst, Michael Georg Frank, Matthias Weigold, Andreas Maußner
The supply of production processes and buildings with thermal energy represents a significant share of the total energy demand of an industrial site. The use of industrial waste heat offers a way to reduce the external purchase of final energy. Due to the lack of transparency and the complexity of such measures, their potential often remains untapped. In the research project ETA im Bestand a user-oriented software solution was prototypically implemented. The software solution enables the development and evaluation of industrial energy concepts. Approaches from the research area of operations research and dynamic simulation are applied.

Effort and Benefits of IIoT Platforms

Effort and Benefits of IIoT Platforms

A systematic approach to identifying when to implement common use cases in SME
Rainer Eber, Steffen Schwarzer, Yannik Müller, Dennis Kollmann
SME often encounter risks and obstacles when implementing IIoT solutions, but these challenges can be mitigated with the use of an IIoT platform. To select the appropriate platform, a decision- making approach has been developed. By choosing the right use cases, companies can directly benefit from IIoT implementation and gain a competitive edge in the market. Our research indicates that at least three applications have a favorable balance between benefits and effort. Once successfully implemented, these applications can be expanded and scaled as the company becomes more digitally proficient.
