AI-Based Assistance Systems in Corporate Learning Processes

AI-Based Assistance Systems in Corporate Learning Processes

Gergana Vladova, Norbert Gronau ORCID Icon
Assistance systems are being used increasingly in the context of digital transformation. They can support employees in industrial production processes both in the learning phase and in the active work phase. In this way, competencies can be built up in a way that is close to the workplace and the process as well as demand-oriented. This paper discusses the current state of research on the possible applications of these assistance systems and illustrates them with examples. Among other things, the current challenges are also highlighted. At the end of the paper, focal points for the future development of AI in industrial learning processes and research on this are identified.

Collaborative Approaches to Competence Development

Collaborative Approaches to Competence Development

IT-supported approaches for self-organized learning paths
Heiko Matheis ORCID Icon, Meike Tilebein ORCID Icon
The ongoing digital transformation is changing work and production environments of companies. In addition, a demand-oriented development and efficient use of employee skills are becoming ever more important for success. Thus, there is a need for new decentralized and situationally adaptable solutions that enable self-organized learning paths and informal competence development. This paper presents challenges of collaborative competence development and solutions for IT-supported self-organized learning paths at different organizational levels and shows project examples from the textile industry.

Competence Needs for Hybridization

Competence Needs for Hybridization

An Approach to Identifying Competency Gaps and Need-Based Competency Development for Hybrid Business Models
Nicole Ottersböck, Sascha Stowasser ORCID Icon, i
Digitalization and the possibility to use big data give companies the opportunity to establish hybrid business models. This enables them to offer customers smart services in addition to their physical products, create more value and strengthen their competitiveness. The hybridization goes along with new competence requirements, which need to be shaped. In the AnGeWaNt project, hybrid business models were developed and implemented in three companies. This article describes the approach to analyze new competence requirements and how to build up new skills for a successful hybridization

Digitalized Industry and Sustainability

Digitalized Industry and Sustainability

Between Synergy and Dissonance
Frieder Schmelzle, Stefanie Kunkel, Marcel Matthess, Grischa Beier
A considerable part of global greenhouse gas emissions is caused in the industrial sector. Its digitialization is often seen as a means to increase sustainability. At the same time, ecological and social risks emerge. Their exploration is still in its infancy, however, previous findings point out multiple challenges. These must be conceptually taken into account in order to realize a sustainable industry 4.0. Building on a literature analysis, the following contribution presents current developments in research, industry, and policy. We shed light on a number of selected approaches, which aim at a sustainable industry 4.0. Finally, practical design options are outlined.

Green Hydrogen and Its Derivatives

Green Hydrogen and Its Derivatives

Bremerhaven on the way to climate neutrality
Sara Hritz-Hagenah, Gerhard Schories, Michael Murck, Saskia Greiner
Reducing CO2 emissions to lower the global warming impact and protect the environment is a central objective of environmental policy. Climate neutrality shall be achieved by 2045 and a cross-sectoral reduction of greenhouse gases is only possible if fossil energy can be replaced by a sustainable alternative. In this context, green hydrogen and its derivatives have a high potential and could contribute to a more sustainable future. The city of Bremerhaven has recognized the potential of hydrogen and is currently establishing itself as a test region for hydrogen production and mobile applications.

Measures and Incentives to Reduce CO2-Emissions

Measures and Incentives to Reduce CO2-Emissions

How Small Carriers and Their Shippers Can Work Towards More Climate-Friendly Road Freight Transport
Moritz Petersen, Ramón van Almsick
Accelerating climate change drives companies to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Road freight transport accounts for around 6 % of global CO2 emissions. However, high growth rates, the dependence on fossil fuels, and the high fragmentation of the market make the decarbonization of road freight transport challenging. Based on survey results, this paper elaborates how small road carriers, together with their clients, can contribute to achieving global climate targets by implementing appropriate measures and incentives.

Sustainable Recycling of EV Traction Batteries

Christoph Herrmann, Mark Mennenga, Alexander Kaluza, Bernd Friedrich, Elinor Rombach, Alexander Michaelis, Mareike Partsch, Constantin Wolf
In the course of the shift to electromobility, the use of battery cells as energy storage is facing exponential growth. The goal in research and industry is to design the entire life cycle of these battery cells in the light of global sustainability goals and to ensure the necessary supply of raw materials. In this context, the establishment of efficient recycling technologies plays a central role. In particular, there is a need for research into the further development of process routes according to technological, ecological, economic and social criteria. The competence cluster Recycling & Green Battery (greenBatt) addresses these challenges in 15 research projects. This article presents overarching solution approaches and project highlights.

Off-Peak Delivery: An Opportunity for Climate-Friendly Urban Logistics

Off-Peak Delivery: An Opportunity for Climate-Friendly Urban Logistics

Sebastian Stütz, Daniela Kirsch
Urban logistics has to change to become more silent and eco-friendlier. Off-peak delivery is regarded as an effective measure to cut carbon emissions. Implementing this concept will require the deployment of electric trucks to comply with noise regulations. This article provides an overview of current research themes in this field and uses McKinnon’s “Analytical framework for green logistics”to illustrate off-peak delivery as a concept, its benefits and limitations as well as the key requirements to make this concept work.

Ready for Industrie 4.0?

Prerequisites for successful digitalization in production
Günther Schuh ORCID Icon, Andreas Gützlaff, Matthias Schmidhuber, Judith Fulterer, Max-Ferdinand Stroh, Jan Hicking
Despite a strong media presence and proven potential benefits, Industrie 4.0 is not yet established in many companies. Industry 4.0 projects often remain in a prototype status and do not deliver long-term added value. The solution is an integrated digital system landscape consisting of a connected, digital infrastructure and a business organization oriented towards Industrie 4.0. Through a four-step approach, this paper presents the foundations that need to be created to enable scalable solutions and realize long-term benefits.
