Robotic Process Automation (RPA) stands for the software-supported operation of software solutions via their user interface. The primary goal that RPA seeks to achieve is the automated execution of routine tasks that previously required human intervention. However, the potential of RPA to improve processes in the long term is very limited. Automating processes and bridging front-end media disruptions leads to a variety of dependencies and conditions, which are summarized in this article. The path to a sustainable enterprise architecture (and the processes and systems comprised therein) requires open, adaptive systems with modern architecture that are characterized by a high degree of interoperability at various levels.

Manufacturing companies still have relatively few points of contact with the circular economy. Especially, extending life time of whole products or parts via remanufacturing is an promising approach to reduce waste. However, necessary cost-efficient assessment of the condition of the individual parts is challenging and assessment procedures are technically complex (e.g., scanning and testing procedures). Furthermore, these assessment procedures are usually only available after the disassembly process has been completed. This is where conceptualization, data acquisition and simulation of remanufacturing processes can help. One major constraining aspect of remanufacturing is reducing logistic efforts, since these also have negative external effects on the environment. AI-Based Assistance Systems in Corporate Learning Processes

Assistance systems are being used increasingly in the context of digital transformation. They can support employees in industrial production processes both in the learning phase and in the active work phase. In this way, competencies can be built up in a way that is close to the workplace and the process as well as demand-oriented. This paper discusses the current state of research on the possible applications of these assistance systems and illustrates them with examples. Among other things, the current challenges are also highlighted. At the end of the paper, focal points for the future development of AI in industrial learning processes and research on this are identified.

Digitalization is changing manufacturing substantially. The design of user interfaces in the digitalized production environment is of utmost importance. In this article, potential combinations of approaches to human-machine interaction are shown and examples of applications are presented. Multimodal user interfaces offer a high degree of immersion. As a result, approaches of (among others) VR-, gesture- and speech-based types of interaction are compared with the dialogue principles and their suitability in practice as work and learning support for employees is presented.

Carbon footprints are a widely discussed topic impacting the individuals as well as companies. A company can be transparent in their actions, by publishing a carbon footprint. These footprints can be calculated for a single product or the whole company. However, there is a variety of different carbon footprint standards. The internationally most recognized ones are the publicly available specification 2050, Greenhouse Gas protocol (2011) and ISO 14067. This paper compares the standards and gives a recommendation for the application of product carbon footprints.

Digitized work p rocesses require employees in an Industry 4.0 environment to have the competence to adequately deal with fluid situations on the basis of their own knowledge and the ability to place this knowledge in situation-specific contexts. To this end, the development of a comprehensive understanding of processes is elementary.

Innovation activity in the industrial environment is shifting towards product-service systems as a result of digitalisation. Small and medium-sized enterprises have so far focused their development activities strongly on product development. The switch to “smart” products and the coupling to services often requires personnel and financial resources that SMEs cannot provide. Crowdsourcing is one way of opening up the innovation process to external actors and realising cost and speed advantages. However, the integration of crowdsourcing elements faces several challenges. This article shows both the potentials and the barriers of crowdsourcing in the industrial environment.

The paper describes the conception and implementation as well as offers an insight into the first results of a study with experimental design in a simulated process environment at the Research and Application Center Industry 4.0 in Potsdam. The focus is on learning processes in the field of simple work and their organization through the use of digital assistance systems. In labour research, there are indications that process knowledge is lost with the use of these systems, in the sense of a good knowledge of the entire work process in which the individual activities are embedded. To investigate the role of process knowledge in the use of digital assistance systems, a real factory situation is simulated in the experiment.
