Robotic Process Automation (RPA) in Lieu of a New ERP System

The reality behind the hype

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) stands for the software-supported operation of software solutions via their user interface. The primary goal that RPA seeks to achieve is the automated execution of routine tasks that previously required human intervention. However, the potential of RPA to improve processes in the long term is very limited. Automating processes and bridging front-end media disruptions leads to a variety of dependencies and conditions, which are summarized in this article. The path to a sustainable enterprise architecture (and the processes and systems comprised therein) requires open, adaptive systems with modern architecture that are characterized by a high degree of interoperability at various levels.

The potential of platform-based business models in the context of Industry 4.0 has not yet been fully realized. Approaches for platforms and ecosystem- based value creation vary between industries. The plastics industry has so far been widely ignored in this respect. Due to its industrial structure, in particular the uniform value creation structures, the plastics industry is suitable for digital platforms. In addition to approaches for platforms in the injection molding industry, the article offers a procedure model for the expansion of established business models. This can facilitate the entry into the field of platform-based business models for SMEs.

Recently, implementation procedures of automatic production, digitalization and Industrial Internet of Things technologies (IIoT) play an increasing role in industrial manufacturing processes. Subsequently, the competence requirements for employees change. These changes cannot be anticipated by traditional learning approaches. The following contribution faces this challenge and will show a new integrated learning factory approach which combines the application of new technologies with a flexible production environment. Thus establishing production surroundings that are familiar to the learner. The contribution demonstrates this approach using a quality control process in the context of logistics.
