Distributed Application Integration in Industry

Distributed Application Integration in Industry

Employing microservices for enterprise application integration (EAI)
Jan-Peer Rudolph ORCID Icon
In line with current digital transformations, the number of software applications in use by companies is continuously increasing. This particularly affects industrial enterprises, which face challenges due to their often complex business processes. A holistic and sustainable integration of these business processes requires a strong link between the different information systems used. In this context, application integration, also known as enterprise application integration (EAI), is becoming more important. Modern approaches such as the use of microservices offer a particularly flexible and efficient solution for seamlessly connecting different applications and thus promoting the agility and scalability of a company’s IT landscape.

The Advantages of Microservices

The Advantages of Microservices

An examination of current literature on its application in companies
Korvin Lemke ORCID Icon, Ralph Riedel ORCID Icon
The intensive use of the term microservice calls for a theoretical analysis of the technology. Since service-oriented architecture approaches have produced rather disappointing results, the focus should be on the advantages of microservices. This article questions which principles justify the use of microservices as a system architecture. So far, some of the advantages mentioned in the examined literature have not been further explained or defined. There is also a lack of key figures for measuring success.

Setting Up Assembly Assistance Systems

Setting Up Assembly Assistance Systems

System for the efficient configuration of assembly instructions and assistance functions
Dennis Keiser, Dario Niermann ORCID Icon, Michael Freitag ORCID Icon
In industrial assembly, humans are working more closely with machines due to assembly assistance. However, despite their great potential, the implementation of digital systems is time-consuming, which entails high training requirements. Small and medium-sized businesses, in particular, are reaching their limits. A newly developed setup system is designed to facilitate the introduction and use of such assembly assistance systems and increase their acceptance.

Motion-Mining Compared to Traditional Lean Tools

Motion-Mining Compared to Traditional Lean Tools

Sensor-supported analysis of manual processes in manufacturing and logistics
Hendrik Appelhans, Christopher Borgmann, Carsten Feldmann
Motion-Mining® is a technology that uses motion sensors and pattern recognition to enable automated process mapping and analysis of manual work. This article evaluates the advantages and limitations of its use in manufacturing and logistics processes. To this end, Motion-Mining® is compared with traditional lean management tools used to analyze manual activities. Experiences derived from four use cases provide decision support for selecting the appropriate method for a specific use case.

Digital Platform Frameworks for Manufacturing Companies

Digital Platform Frameworks for Manufacturing Companies

A review
Marcel Rojahn ORCID Icon
In recent years, digital platforms have established themselves as a central concept in the IT field. Due to the wide variety of digital platforms available on the market, there is still a need for clear comparison with criteria to enable interested parties to select, change, operate and further develop these platforms. The following paper aims to contribute to the facilitation of this comparison by undertaking a systematic literature review of digital platform frameworks in the context of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT) for manufacturing companies and thus providing a basis for a number of potential ways to effectively compare current digital platforms and ecosystems.

The Utopia of European Cybersecurity Certifications

The Utopia of European Cybersecurity Certifications

Alexander Lawall ORCID Icon, Jesus Luna Garcia
Interoperable automation can benefit cybersecurity certification processes that result from the EU Cybersecurity Act (e.g. EUCS) so that they represent less overhead for the stakeholders involved. The development of key standardization efforts involving relevant stakeholders (e.g. regulators) is needed to fully realize these benefits. EU projects like H2020 MEDINA, HEU COBALT and communities such as EUROSCAL are well on the way to achieving this goal. However, more practical experience is needed to make continuous certification with automation a reality.

Energy Efficiency Through Intelligent Electricity Data Acquisition

Energy Efficiency Through Intelligent Electricity Data Acquisition

Wireless retrofit solution based on IoT technologies and open-source software for existing industrial buildings
Sergej Kreber, Kevin Kutzner, Dieter Uckelmann ORCID Icon
Facility managers for industrial properties are faced with the challenge of optimizing the energy efficiency of their facilities in the face of ever-increasing energy demand and rising energy costs. Digital processes that enable the comprehensive monitoring, analysis and control of energy demand offer an effective way to reduce costs, increase energy efficiency and make optimal use of resources. Based on IoT technologies and open-source software, a cost-effective, wireless and flexible retrofit solution for real-time energy data collection has been developed.

Dimensions of Industrial Openness

Dimensions of Industrial Openness

Understanding Openness and Its Implications for Sustainable Transformation
Nils Weiher ORCID Icon, Theresa Riedelsheimer ORCID Icon, Kai Lindow ORCID Icon
The topic of Openness is of growing importance for industry, especially in Europe. However, the term Openness is used very differently. Openness includes several concepts, including Open Source Hardware, Open Source Software, Open Data, Open Standards, Open Innovation, Open Science and Open Education. The concepts address different dimensions of Openness, all based on some kind of participation and with the goal to create more transparency and accessibility. This article defines the concepts and provides a basic understanding of their importance for industry and for greater sustainability.

Waste Heat Utilization through Thermal Cross-linking

Waste Heat Utilization through Thermal Cross-linking

A software solution for the development of optimized industrial energy concepts
Lukas Theisinger, Fabian Borst, Michael Georg Frank, Matthias Weigold, Andreas Maußner
The supply of production processes and buildings with thermal energy represents a significant share of the total energy demand of an industrial site. The use of industrial waste heat offers a way to reduce the external purchase of final energy. Due to the lack of transparency and the complexity of such measures, their potential often remains untapped. In the research project ETA im Bestand a user-oriented software solution was prototypically implemented. The software solution enables the development and evaluation of industrial energy concepts. Approaches from the research area of operations research and dynamic simulation are applied.
