In remanufacturing, used goods are brought up to the quality level of a new product. This distinguishes it from recycling, which recovers materials and converts them into new units or products. Various uncertainties, such as the condition, quantity and time of return, can be minimized with Industry 4.0 approaches and artificial intelligence. A special learning concept ensures that employees have the required competence profiles in this context.

Digital product passports are becoming increasingly mandatory for monitoring saving targets within the framework of EU-wide emission reductions. DPPs can enable a standardized exchange of emissions data along the entire product life cycle. A framework for systematic introduction and targeted use can simplify their often difficult practical integration, especially for small and medium-sized companies.

In this paper, a local remanufacturing approach is presented, which makes it possible to reduce resource consumption, to promote local enterprises and to offer efficient solutions for the regional reuse of goods.

Manufacturing companies still have relatively few points of contact with the circular economy. Especially, extending life time of whole products or parts via remanufacturing is an promising approach to reduce waste. However, necessary cost-efficient assessment of the condition of the individual parts is challenging and assessment procedures are technically complex (e.g., scanning and testing procedures). Furthermore, these assessment procedures are usually only available after the disassembly process has been completed. This is where conceptualization, data acquisition and simulation of remanufacturing processes can help. One major constraining aspect of remanufacturing is reducing logistic efforts, since these also have negative external effects on the environment. Thus regionalization is an additional but in the end consequential challenge for remanufacturing. Analysis and evaluation of current research approaches

Remanufacturing, previously characterized by manual and cost-intensive processes, is a critical step on the way to a resource-efficient circular economy. Industry and research agree that the introduction of Industry 4.0 technologies is the key to the development of automated and economical remanufacturing systems. Based on a systematic literature review, this paper is dedicated to the analysis of promising Industry 4.0 approaches with a focus on the overall process as well as the sub-processes of disassembly and inspection. The results suggest that there is a need for additional knowledge, experience and research in the development and real demonstration of the approaches and their transferability to broader application fields.

The aim of circular economy is to return a used product to the product and production life cycle several times in a value-adding way. This article presents the current industrial practice for a successful circular economy and the associated potentials, based on a definition of circular economy and its principles. Afterwards, existing challenges of the circular economy are analyzed. The article intends to support decision-makers in recognizing the advantages of circular economy and to tackle challenges for a successful introduction at an early stage.

After-sales services generate a high percentage of today’s business volume in the industry of producer goods. Basis of after-sales services is the availability of spare parts for a contracted timeframe of support. A long term provision of electronic spare parts, however, faces problems because of short innovation cycles and the resulting decreasing availability of components. A closed-loop supply chain integrating manufacturer and treatment facilities provides an opportunity to ensure a long-term provision of spare parts by using components of used equipment.
