Remanufacturing, previously characterized by manual and cost-intensive processes, is a critical step on the way to a resource-efficient circular economy. Industry and research agree that the introduction of Industry 4.0 technologies is the key to the development of automated and economical remanufacturing systems. Based on a systematic literature review, this paper is dedicated to the analysis of promising Industry 4.0 approaches with a focus on the overall process as well as the sub-processes of disassembly and inspection. The results suggest that there is a need for additional knowledge, experience and research in the development and real demonstration of the approaches and their transferability to broader application fields.

The use of key figures allows for a comprehensive consideration of the performance characteristics of a company and serves as basis for decisions. The mapping of systems in a Digital Twin increases the amount of data and also its timeliness. The paper describes a holistic, transferable KPI network that can be used to manage companies. Strategic goals can be operationalized through the KPI network. Using an industry example, advantages and possibilities of using such a network are demonstrated.

Germany is Europe’s most industrialized country. The close cooperation between industry and academia ensures rapid market entry of new technologies. The production is always an integrative character of disciplines in the implementation of an idea into a product. To meet the growing challenges in the high-wage countries, any potential must be raised by new technologies continuously. Right now the information and communication technology is a particularly prominent enabler.
