A decisive competitive factor for smaller and medium-sized manufacturers of one-of-a-kind and small batches is their products’ timely completion, delivery and commissioning. Precise logistics planning is just as important as production control. However, the processes are often characterized by uncertainties, e.g. due to local conditions at the customer or cooperation with suppliers. Digital shadows for data evaluation in real time offer a convincing solution.

The planning of logistics processes and their efficient implementation are decisive competitive factors for customized plant construction. On the construction site, however, the collection of logistics data is often neglected, preventing the project planner from building a reliable database. Related information gaps can be closed with the help of a digital shadow that collects logistics-relevant data (partially) automatically, stores them in a consistent manner and makes them available to project management. This article describes the first important results of a research project on information and communication processes in construction site logistics and explains their vital role in the development and use of a digital shadow.

New types of value creation characterized by extensive data use and cross-company data sharing are becoming increasingly important for companies. However, many barriers slow down the path towards data-based value creation, especially for SMEs. Companies often lack specific ideas for data usage or digitalization and data competencies. As a result, there is often untapped value creation potential in companies. By describing a real laboratory setting with real experiments, this article demonstrates support options for companies to identify their own "data treasure" and to lift it.

One-of-a-kind or small batch manufacturer can only derive process times from previous projects to a limited extent for the planning of customer order and component-specific projects and transfer these to new projects. This is due to the fact that the process times depend on influencing parameters that are directly related to the respective component. As part of a research project, these influencing parameters to the duration for logistic processes are examined. The identification of the influencing parameters using a Delphi Study is explained in this article.

The presented QuickCheck enables a short and efficient analysis, understanding and modeling of as-is business processes in mid-size companies. Root causes of elaborated optimization potential of those analyzed business processes will be identified. Needed actions are qualified using an effect to cost portfolio analysis by relevance. Based on the portfolio analysis human resources can be utilized effectively in resulting projects which can be executed efficiently.

Material-flow simulation of forward, backward and time-oriented simulation models

Shorter product lifecycles, customer-oriented production and raising variants of the manufactured goods are representative for today’s industries. One well-established method for planning, safeguarding and improvement of production processes is the material flow simulation. In order to cover all phases of the process development, a backward-simulation approach beside the usual method is needed. The generated simulation results are moreover to be integrated in “control centre”-views, wherefore a time-oriented execution of the simulation has to be added. This article shows some functions of the material flow simulator d³FACT insight, which already allows to execute simulation models in forward or backward direction, as well as a time-oriented simulation.
