The Key to Successful Digitalization

The Key to Successful Digitalization

Development, implementation and benefits of digital twins in Industry 4.0
Andreas Bayha ORCID Icon, Sönke Knoch ORCID Icon, Dirk Schöttke ORCID Icon
The success of technologies depends not only on their innovative strength and acceptance, but also on their management. Decision-makers evaluate factors like technical framework conditions and organizational requirements, with the demand for flexibility adding to the complexity. Industry 4.0 addresses this with networking, transparency and decentralized decisions. Digital twins, which can be implemented with open source software, play a key role.

Digital Twin and Vertical Integration

Digital Twin and Vertical Integration

Support for sustainability concepts in production processes
Ute Dietrich
Establishing “smart” production processes that are focused on sustainability and based on aggregated data requires a great deal of exchange at various levels. The vertical integration of different production components provides companies with an important basis for achieving their sustainability goals. Digital twins can play a decisive role in driving this process forward.

The Asset Administration Shell in Practice

The Asset Administration Shell in Practice

Key to unified IoT integration of heterogeneous assets
Detlef Gerhard, Mario Wolf, Timo Köring, Jannick Huxoll, Julian Rolf
In practice, the integration of heterogeneous IoT components is often a complex and confusing process. The different ways of representing information about individual assets create the desire for a standardized representation. The administration shell (AAS) creates a digital exchange format for this purpose. This potential is to be exploited and put into practice as part of the EIT project "AASHub". The aim of the project is to develop a process for integrating information from the administration shell into the IoT platform "Contact Elements for IoT". (Only in German)

Maintenance 4.0

Maintenance 4.0

A concept for the representation of maintenance processes and the role of humans in the Industry 4.0
Michael Kelker, Roland Heidel, Lennart Brumby
This article presents a concept for the visualization of maintenance processes in Industry 4.0 using the reference architecture model Industry 4.0, in short RAMI 4.0. The mirroring of maintenance processes is done by transferring relevant maintenance terms from various standards into maintenance assets and the corresponding management shells. Here, the role of the human being has to be considered and the dynamic behaviour of maintenance processes has to be mapped. In this respect, this concept presents different methods of visualizing these issues.

Digital Solutions for the Control of Dynamically interconnected Assembly Systems

Digital Solutions for the Control of Dynamically interconnected Assembly Systems

Realisierung von flexiblen Routen im Kontext Industrie 4.0
Jonas Rachner, Simon Hort, Robert Schmitt ORCID Icon
Due to an increased product variety, the need for flexibly configured assembly systems is steadily growing. In contrast to classic assembly lines with predominantly rigid conveyor technology, efficient, individual assembly routes with cycle-independent processing times are implemented in a dynamically interconnected assembly system using intelligent control and AGVs. This article presents the most important factors for the IT-related implementation of a dynamically interconnected assembly system and shows which existing standards from the field of Industry 4.0 can be used for this purpose.

Decentralized IOTA-based Industry Marketplace

Decentralized IOTA-based Industry Marketplace

Industry marketplace based on IOTA, eCl@ss and I4.0 administrative shell
Alexander Belyaev, Christian Diedrich, Holger Köther, Alaettin Dogan
This article presents an IOTA Industry Marketplace. The industry marketplace is a manufacturer- and industry-neutral open-source platform, based on the specifications and guidelines of the platform Industry 4.0 and enables an uncomplicated integration of company information systems into the overall network. The industry marketplace combines distributed ledger technology, unchangeable audit trails, standardized, machine-readable language, an integrated distributed identity system and provides a trusted and secure infrastructure for data and value transfer.

The Digital Twin Theory – A New View on a Buzzword

The Digital Twin Theory - A New View on a Buzzword

Andreas Deuter, Florian Pethig
The digital twin is supposed to be a major tool for increasing productivity in the age of industrial digitalization. However, there are many heterogeneous definitions about the digital twin. This situation hardly supports the practical digital twin implementation. For this reason, the article introduces a new concept, called the Digital Twin Theory which is a theoretical framework containing several hypotheses about digital twins. The aim of the framework is a better understanding about the digital twin management in practice.
