Potentials of Micro Machining

New trends in manufacturing and innovative machine concepts
Ekkard Brinksmeier, Oltmann Riemer, Carla Brandao, Axel Meier, Florian Böhmermann
The development of novel micro parts for several applications has grown rapidly over the last years. In most cases, it is possible to manufacture micro parts by means of micro machining. However, mechanical material removal processes make use of large-scale machine tools with dimensions that exceed the small-sized parts (usually up to 10 mm) by a factor of more than 1,000. This paper shows advances in the combination of micro and ultra-precision machining processes in order to meet the strict micro parts’ requirements and a novel concept for a micro grinding module, which can be integrated into small-scaled machine tools.

Molding of Large-Area Plastic Films

Improving functional surfaces with microstructured embossing rollers
Kai Rickens, Oltmann Riemer, Ekkard Brinksmeier
The microstructuring of embossing rollers offers an economic and productive production tool for molding of large-area plastic films with functional and optical properties. Due to ultraprecision diamond machining processes a wide spectrum of microstructures in combination with a high manufacturing flexibility can be produced for optical, fluidic and mechanical applications. Both, the microstructuring of embossing rollers by ultraprecision diamond machining as well as the following molding process of plastic films exhibit a high potential for innovative applications in industrial and consumer products.
