Handling increasing complexity is a major challenge within the manufacturing industry. Methods from Industrie 4.0, e. g. data analytics, can support in reducing complexity. Currently, benefits of implementing data analytics within large scale manufacturing are limited. For this purpose, a study regarding the potentials and obstacles for data analytics in large scale manufacturing was conducted. The results of this study show the necessity of adaptive data availability, strategic prioritization as well as scalable data analytics in order for data analytics to be successful.

The devastating economical crisis and the rise of economy in 2010 showed that companies nowadays act in a turbulent environment. Internal and external factors like customer demand change in a very dynamic way. The research and development project ProAktiW is funded by the BMBF. Results of the project will show that an increase of changeability induces the sustainable and economical production in Germany. This article shows first results of the recently started project.

The importance of maintenance in the producing industry keeps increasing. Maintenance costs in the old EU countries have doubled every decade; according to estimations, they amount to about 9,000 billion Euros per year. Long considered a sleeping beauty, many companies have recognized the importance of a holistic management of availability. However, the potentials and field of action in sustainable maintenance are widely unknown. The VDMA, the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (Dortmund) and the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of the RWTH Aachen University of Technology have conducted a study to investigate the status and the potentials of maintenance in German companies. The study has been supported by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Problems and solutions as well as their implementation potential have been analyzed in the field of technology, strategy, organization, and business models. The study confirms that ...
