The governance of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) usage is often described as a formalized reporting system. This neglects the early-stage mechanisms of coping with ethical challenges during the GenAI implementation period. Exploratory empirical findings from the Ruhr area reveal that managerial communicative practices serve as a substitute for missing institutional structures, particularly at an early stage of GenAI implementation in SMEs.

Open Innovation

Open Innovation

Strengthening Innovation in SMEs
Annette Henn ORCID Icon, Dirk Sackmann
Despite the fact that SME innovation is critical to a country’s economic success, SMEs spend less than 50 % of their budget on R&D when compared to large companies. “Open innovation”is seen as helping SMEs to improve their competitive position. For regions dominated by SMEs it is important to develop an ecosystem that supports open innovation processes. Universities can be key enablers within these ecosystems. They support SMEs with their expertise in science and engineering as well as in innovation and project management. In this article we present a case study to demonstrate the role of a university of applied sciences in an open innovation ecosystem.

Effort and Benefits of IIoT Platforms

Effort and Benefits of IIoT Platforms

A systematic approach to identifying when to implement common use cases in SME
Rainer Eber, Steffen Schwarzer, Yannik Müller, Dennis Kollmann
SME often encounter risks and obstacles when implementing IIoT solutions, but these challenges can be mitigated with the use of an IIoT platform. To select the appropriate platform, a decision- making approach has been developed. By choosing the right use cases, companies can directly benefit from IIoT implementation and gain a competitive edge in the market. Our research indicates that at least three applications have a favorable balance between benefits and effort. Once successfully implemented, these applications can be expanded and scaled as the company becomes more digitally proficient.

Digital Transformation for SMEs

Digital Transformation for SMEs

Developing a roadmap for Industry 4.0 visions in small and medium-sized enterprises
Robin Sutherland ORCID Icon, Nicolas Wittine ORCID Icon, Deike Gliem ORCID Icon, Sigrid Wenzel ORCID Icon
Small and medium-sized enterprises still face the challenge of shaping their digital transformation. Maturity models offer a way to capture the situation within a company and support the formation of an Industry 4.0 vision. This paper presents a methodology that companies can use to develop a roadmap for shaping digital transformation by enabling the transfer of this vision into concrete decision-making steps.

Paving the way to the 4th Industrial Revolution
Industry 4.0 and Smart Factory have become a real source of hope and are the technological answer to some of the biggest challenges of our time: sustainable production, global interconnections, intelligent exchange of knowledge. This special issue discusses research questions relating to process improvement, artificial intelligence and factory software.
MES for Manufacturing SMEs

MES for Manufacturing SMEs

Adapted procedure model and tool for an effcient selection
Rainer Eber, Steffen Schwarzer, Daniel Miller
Manufacturing SMEs are structurally di erent from other companies and therefore have special requirments for Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and the associated software selection. Process models must therefore be adapted. For the identication of requirements, a systematic categorization based on existing models was performed. With the help of an existing market research platform, further selection steps were developed in order to provide a useful and easy-to-use tool for SMEs, which enables them to select efficiently sufficient MES-software according to their needs.

Additive Manufacturing Value Chain

Additive Manufacturing Value Chain

Development of an SME-specific value chain of additively manufactured final metal parts
Tim Niklas Mai, Martin Brylowski, Ayman Nagi, Wolfgang Kersten ORCID Icon
Additive manufacturing processes are becoming increasingly important in industry and enable the cost-e ective production of complex components in small quantities. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in particular can bene t from the high customization potential enabling the development of new business models. However, the widespread use of additive processes faces high production costs and technological challenges. Meanwhile, scienti c research focuses on the optimization of individual process steps of additive manufacturing and does not o er su cient support for SMEs. Therefore, this paper deals with the development of a cross-process value chain of additive manufacturing for SMEs. Based on a systematic analysis of scienti c literature, relevant additive manufacturing processes were investigated, and a cross-process value chain was derived. The results were veri ed by expert interviews and central research and development requirements were extracted.

Biomimetics in Holistic Production Systems

Biomimetics in Holistic Production Systems

Biomimetic Methods to Support Process Standardization in SMEs
Annika Lange ORCID Icon, Patrick Gering, Nicole Oertwig ORCID Icon, Thomas Knothe ORCID Icon
Holistic production systems (HPS) do not only produce positive effects in large companies - they also have an impact on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), such as improved adherence to delivery dates. However, HPS cannot be copied from large companies to SMEs due to different initial situations and circumstances. The introduction of HPS means a high effort for SMEs. In this paper, an approach is presented on how a bionic principle can make HPS less costly and at the same time more effective for SMEs.

Development of a Methodology for Selecting a Traceability System

Development of a Methodology for Selecting a Traceability System

Entwicklung einer Methodik zur Auswahl eines Traceability-Systems
Nicolas Wittine ORCID Icon, Tim Trostmann, Ana Luiza Amaral Bicalho, Christian Kern, Sigrid Wenzel ORCID Icon, Robert Refflinghaus
Traceability systems are used in large companies to trace and track products. Although these systems aid to avoid quality and cost risks, they are only used hesitantly in SMEs. This is partly due to a lack of market transparency. Consequently, a methodology is needed that enables SMEs to capture their requirements using reference products and processes and to map them to available software solutions. This paper deals with a methodology that simplifies the selection process and focuses on the approach regarding the creating reference products and processes.

The Potential Model

The Potential Model

Supporting SMEs in selecting suitable Industry 4.0 solutions
Patrick Schumacher, Christian Weckenborg ORCID Icon, Thomas S. Spengler, David Schneider, Tobias Huth, Thomas Vietor
The implementation of Industry 4.0 solutions offers great potential for meeting growing challenges in the context of digitization. Nevertheless, particularly small and medium-sized companies are hesitant to implement Industry 4.0 solutions. Within the framework of the ERDF research project »Synus«, methods and tools were developed to support small and medium-sized companies in the evaluation and selection of Industry 4.0 solutions. This contribution presents the potential model, which enables small and medium-sized enterprises to select suitable Industry 4.0 solutions.
