The SARS-CoV-2-crisis has brought many companies into existential distress. The sudden loss of suppliers and customers as well as short-term changes in regulations and relevant information sources pose challenges for companies. The linking and visualization of information from the corporate environment with internal capabilities remain an unsolved problem. This article shows how a situation picture can help companies to act in a goal-oriented manner.

To remain competitive in a globalized market, enterprises must consider sustainably aspects. The classic aims of quality, costs and time are extended by aspects of the ecological, economic and social quality. The challenge to cope with these new dimensions aiming at long term success is raised by the turbulent influences in a global market with varying demands. A new factory typology, the so called urban factory, pursues the aim to exhaust the potentials of an interlinking of factory and town efficiently. The aim of this topology is to improve the competitive situation of enterprises. In this case the synergetic use of material and energy sources is in focus.

A simple production system enables to customer oriented manufacturing with low cost and high costumer service. The most four important ways to a simple production are covered by: • Reduction of the number of items (finished goods, intermediate as well as purchasing parts) • Setting of clear and non-conflicting objectives as well as prioritizing measurements needed • Organizing of a continuous production flow and • Applying monitoring instruments instead of detailed planning and scheduling tools

This paper discusses ideas about and experiences with flexible simulation of real-time data streams generated by production networks when state-of-the-art automatic identification and localization technologies are applied. Flexibility here means the possibility to freely define the objects and their related types of events and statuses that are recorded in production and logistics processes. The data streams generated during simulation can be used to test and compare operational control strategies for processes in production networks in an offline or online mode.
